The open time is usually calculated from the time of gluing, until the time when the edge band is bonded to the substrate. The open time usually varies with the requirements of the hot melt glue for edge banding.

First of all, if it is a manual hot-melt edge sealing machine because the manual operation of the workers is generally not as fast as the machine, the time required for the hot-melt glue will be longer, to facilitate the workers to have sufficient time for the edge sealing of the curved parts.
Wholesale hot melt adhesive is generally applied on the edge band, but some manufacturers who use edge banding will also use double-sided gluing to ensure the product quality after edge banding.
The melting temperature of manual edge banding machines is generally controlled below 180 °C, so when choosing hot melt adhesives, medium and low-temperature hot melt adhesives with a temperature below 180 °C are selected.
If it is a thin PVC edge below 0.2mm, the temperature of the hot melt glue for edge banding used must be around 120°C, otherwise, the temperature is higher than 120°C.
After the substrate and the edge band are glued and pressed, the edge band will soon be cut off, trimmed up and down, and polished. In these processes, the edge band just needs to be able to withstand the mechanical cutting force.
Therefore, the selected hot melt glue must have a short open time and initial tack strength. For edge banding materials with a thickness of more than 0.2mm, because the cutting force will be large, if the initial bond strength of the hot melt adhesive is not enough, cracks will occur between the plate and the edge band.
When it comes to the feeding speed of the machine, generally, the feeding speed of the automatic edge banding machine in China is about 8-25m/min, and the temperature of the hot melt glue for edge banding is about 200 ℃.
Finally, the feed rate of the edgebander is closely related to the opening time. It is very important in the selection and use of hot melt adhesives. In the hot-melt edge banding machine with fast feeding, the hot melt glue with a short open time must be selected, otherwise, the hot melt glue with a long open time must be selected.
